This is the story. A scorpion wants to cross a river, but he can’t swim. He asks a frog to help. The frog is worried, but the scorpion promises «I won’t sting you, because if I did I would drown». In mid river the scorpion stings the frog. The dying frog asks «why?» and the drowning scorpion answers ….

La storia è questa. Uno scorpione vuole attraversare un fiume, ma non sa nuotare. Chiede a una rana di traghettarlo. La rana non si fida, ma lo scorpione la rassicura: “se ti pungessi annegherei”. La rana accetta, ma a metà percorso lo scorpione la colpisce con il suo aculeo velenoso. La rana, disperata e morente, gli chiede “Perché?”.

Lo scorpione, prima di morire annegato, risponde “È la mia natura”.

Fra le tante varianti ce n’è una libanese, in cui la risposta finale dello scorpione è «Mia cara, questo è il Medio Oriente».
