When Angela Vicario was sent back home on her wedding night because she was not a virgin, the whole village knew that Santiago Nasar was going to be assassinated.

In the early morning Angela’s twin brothers went to the market to sharpen their knives, and at the market people asked them whether they were about to kill Santiago Nasar. The Vicario twins waited for Santiago Nasar at the convenience store to kill him, but the Colonel who had just come in to buy some milk for the troups happened to notice their knives and confiscated them.

After the Vicario brothers had gone back to the market to sharpen two more knives, they returned to the convenience store to wait for Santiago Nasar, and the whole village knew what was going to happen.
When Santiago Nasar showed up at the door of the house where he lived, the Vicario brothers killed him.
